The International Festival of the Masquerade Games “ Surva” in town of Pernik, Bulgaria, promotes the ancient Bulgarian custom “Kukeri” – masked men dancing in a mystic unity of rhythm, sound, and colour. About 5000 participants are taking part annually in this event.

Wearing impressive masks and unique costumes the “Kukers” fill the air with the sounds of hundreds of bells and whispered blessings wishes for prosperity. They are intended to chase away the evil spirits and prepare people for a new beginning.
